The Three Styles in One Minute

Framed: aluminum frame around every glass edge, 1/4″ glass, most affordable, most watertight. Semi-frameless: slim frame around the perimeter only, frameless-look door edge, mid-priced. Frameless: no frame at all, thick 3/8″–1/2″ glass, premium look and premium price.

Where Each One Wins

Choose framed for rentals, kids’ baths, and budget refreshes — maximum seal, minimum spend, and modern matte-black framing has erased the dated look. Choose semi-frameless when you want most of the glassy look without master-bath spending, or when your walls are a flexible fiberglass surround. Choose frameless when the shower is the centerpiece: a master bath, a remodel, tile you paid to show off. It costs the most because thick tempered glass and precision fabrication cost the most — and it’s the style buyers photograph.

The Tri-Cities wrinkle: whichever style you choose, our hard Columbia Basin water treats all glass the same. Budget for a protective coating regardless of frame style — it changes the ownership experience more than the frame decision does. Details in the hard water guide.

The Decision in Two Questions

1. Is this bathroom a showpiece or a workhorse? Showpiece → frameless. Workhorse → framed or semi-frameless. 2. What are the walls? Tile over solid backing handles anything; fiberglass surrounds point to framed or semi-frameless. Still torn? Call and describe the bathroom — naming the right style takes about two minutes.

Quick Answers

Is frameless really worth the money?

In a master bath or remodel, usually yes — it's the highest-impact visual upgrade in the room and the style that helps at resale. In a hall bath or rental, the money is better spent elsewhere.

Do frameless doors leak more than framed doors?

A properly measured and installed frameless door doesn't leak in normal use, but framed doors are objectively more sealed. Households with aggressive sprayer use or splashy kids get more forgiveness from a frame.

Which style is easiest to clean?

Frameless — it's mostly flat glass with no channels to trap soap and minerals. Whatever the style, a protective coating plus a daily squeegee pass is what actually keeps Tri-Cities glass clear.
